Ingredients

500 grams Surmai fish steaks, cut into pieces
2.
2 tablespoons oil
3.
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
4.
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
5.
1 onion, finely chopped
6.
2 tomatoes, finely chopped

2 green chillies, slit lengthwise
8.
1 sprig curry leaves
9.
1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
10.
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
11.
2 teaspoons red chilli powder (adjust to taste)

2 teaspoons coriander powder
13.
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
14.
1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
15.
1 cup coconut milk

Salt to taste

Direction
Step 1
Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and fennel seeds and let them splutter.
Step 2
Add finely chopped onion, green chillies, and curry leaves to the pan. saute until the onions turn golden brown.
Step 3
Add ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
Step 4
Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and fenugreek seeds. Mix well and cook for a minute to release the flavours.
Step 5
Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy. Pour in the coconut milk, stirring gently to combine all the ingredients. Season with salt and let the gravy simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavours to meld together.
Step 6
Gently place the fish pieces into the gravy, ensuring they are submerged. Cover the pan and cook for 8-10 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily.
Step 7
Garnish the Chettinad Surmai Curry with fresh coriander leaves.
Step 8
Serve the flavourful curry hot with steamed rice or roti.
